Incorporating plants into your home decor doesn’t just make a room look better—it truly brings it to life. And I mean that literally. At Type A Decor, we believe that plants do more than just sit in corners looking pretty. They help create spaces that feel alive, personal, and full of heart.

I have 36 potted plants in my home—and yes, I’m proud of every single one. (I even have the “Plant Lady” flower pot to prove it, a sweet gift from someone who clearly knows me well!) But here’s the good news: you don’t need dozens of plants to enjoy the benefits. Even a single, well-placed one can work wonders.

Let’s talk about why plants matter, and how you can bring more greenery into your space—without feeling overwhelmed.

Why Plants Belong in Every Home

Plants aren’t just beautiful. They do real work behind the scenes. Adding plants to your home can:

  • Boost your mood and reduce stress
  • Help clean the air by filtering toxins
  • Create a feeling of calm and connection
  • Make your rooms feel finished and full of life

Whether you’re working with a big house or a tiny apartment, there’s always a way to fit in a little green. When you’re thinking about how to decorate a room, don’t forget to look at your plant options.

Simple Ways to Decorate with Plants

Here are some easy, creative ideas I use in my own home—and for my clients—when decorating with plants.

1. Make a Plant the Star of the Room

Want to make a big impact with just one plant? Choose a large, statement-making one. A fiddle leaf figMonstera, or Bird of Paradise can instantly transform your living room or entryway. Pair it with a planter that fits your home’s style, and you’ve created a natural focal point.

Place it where it can be seen and appreciated—near a window or tucked beside your favorite chair. It adds height, color, and energy to the room.

2. Group Small Plants for Big Style

If one big plant isn’t your thing, try grouping smaller ones. I love clustering small and medium plants on shelves, windowsills, or a tiered plant stand. Use different sizes and leaf shapes to create interest.

Think: a few succulents, a trailing pothos, and a bold-leafed calathea all living happily together. You’ll get that lush look without needing a full jungle.

3. Use Your Walls

Short on floor space? No problem. Go vertical. Hang trailing plants in macramé holders or mount floating shelves to create a wall garden. A cascading pothos or heartleaf philodendron looks beautiful spilling down a shelf.

This works especially well in smaller homes, kitchens, or apartments where every square inch matters. Plus, it adds dimension and color to blank walls.

4. Mix Plants with Art

Plants can be part of your artwork. Try placing a leafy friend next to framed prints, sculptures, or personal photos. A few potted plants mixed into a gallery wall make everything feel warmer and more personal.

I call this “living art.” It turns your display into something that grows and changes with you. And yes, your “Plant Lady” pot totally belongs in this setup.

5. Choose Pots with Personality

Your plants deserve to dress well! The planters you use are just as important as the plants themselves. Try mixing terracotta, ceramic, and woven baskets. Look for interesting shapes, patterns, and colors.

I always encourage clients to use pots that reflect their personality—vintage finds, artisan ceramics, even playful pieces like that cheeky little “Plant Lady” pot someone gave you. These little details make your space feel more like you.

6. Use Plants with Purpose

Plants can be functional, too. Place herbs like basil and rosemary in your kitchen window so they’re close when cooking. Add an aloe plant to the bathroom for skincare. Use snake plants or peace lilies in bedrooms to help purify the air.

It’s not just about looks. These choices help make your home healthier and more enjoyable to live in.

7. Mix and Match Styles

Don’t feel like every plant needs to match. The beauty of greenery is how flexible it can be. Combine modern planters with vintage ones. Try soft, flowy plants next to upright, architectural ones.

Mixing textures and heights keeps things interesting and adds personality. It’s okay if it’s not perfectly coordinated—it just needs to feel natural.

Nervous About Plant Care? Start Simple.

Not sure where to begin? You don’t have to be an expert. Some of my favorite low-maintenance plants include:

  • Snake plants – tough and stylish
  • ZZ plants – forgiving if you forget to water
  • Pothos – fast-growing and hard to kill
  • Succulents – great for sunny spots and small spaces

Start with one or two easy options. Once you feel confident, you can add more. But truly—even one plant can change the mood of a space.

You Don’t Need a Jungle to Make a Difference

Having 36 plants might sound fun (and it is), but you don’t need a full jungle to get started. A single plant on your desk or nightstand can bring calm, color, and a smile to your face.

Whether you’re a longtime plant lover or just getting started—maybe with your very first “Plant Lady” pot—you’re in the right place. Decorating with plants is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to add beauty and soul to your home.

Final Thoughts from Me at Type A Decor

Plants are more than decor—they’re companions. They grow with you. They shift the energy of your home. And they give you something to care for, which in turn helps you care for yourself.

If you’re looking for help designing a space that feels alive, personal, and peaceful, I’m here for it. At Type A Decor, I help clients combine style, function, and a little bit of green to create homes that truly feel like home.

So go ahead. Bring home that fern. Repot that pothos. Or just pick up a tiny succulent for your desk. You don’t need 36 plants to enjoy the magic. You just need one to get started.

Happy planting! 🌿
